A late post, two weeks ago, I won the feature (colour) category at the annual BCYNA Ma Murray awards. This photograph of an artist cleaning a totem pole originally appeared on the front page of the Victoria News.

One of the great things about iPhones and apps is it reminds you that you can just head out and take photographs for no other reason than fun. No assignments, no projects, just snapping and playing and maybe even coming up with an interesting photo or two.

UVic Documentary Photography Course Done

I’ve just finished up the documentary project class I was teaching as part of the University of Victoria’s Continuing Education program. The first time for continuing ed and it was a great experience. A small class but enthusiastic and everyone ended up working on a great project of their choice. The best part of teaching for me is watching the students’ confidence and skill improve through the duration of the course. We ended up with a real variety of projects and some amazing individual photographs. I’ve got another proposal in for a fall course at UVic. I’ll post the details when I know it’s a go. It’ll be a very different photo offering.

Olympic Peninsula Weekend Road Trip

Hit the road for a weekend with a trip around the Olympic Peninsula. I’d been down the east side before travelling to and from Portland but hadn’t done the whole loop around the peninsula. Great trip although the weather was constantly changing, providing a number of challenges for driving and making it difficult to get all the photos I wanted. That said it was a lot of fun and I saw lots of places that I want to go back to.

You have to love university students, raising money for charity with a dunk tank in December, even on the west coast it’s cold when you hit the water.
