Worthy Causes – Shelter Box & Ancient Forest Alliance

comment 1

I don’t usually hype groups or causes but two very different organizations came to my attention this week that deserve some attention and donations. The first,  Shelterbox, supplies a large box stuffed with tents, bedding, waterfilter, stove, pots etc, everything that a person or family in a disaster situation needs and needs quickly. It’s such a simple but effective idea. Shelterbox groups can be found around the world and are affiliated with Rotary clubs. I found out about the group while doing a story for the paper on them this week as they are shipping boxes to Haiti right now. Have a look at their website, a worthy cause.

The other group is a brand new, the Ancient Forests Alliance, started by Ken Wu who was long associated with the Western Canada Wilderness Committee, Tara Sawatsky and photographer T J Watt.  The WCWC has decided they are pulling away from focusing on forests and concentrating on the marine environment. This greatly concerned Wu and others so they created this organization. Check them out, story here. Their website here. While you’re at it check out TJ Watt’s photo site.

  1. I thought I would leave a short comment just to set the record straight. The Wilderness Committee is NOT pulling away from focusing on forests to concentrate on the marine environment. Nothing could be further from the truth! We have many front line campaigns to protect forests, including our campaign to end oldgrowth logging on BC’s south coast – including Vancouver Island. Here is a link to our campaign page on the issue: http://wildernesscommittee.org/what_we_do/protecting_wild_lands/stop_old_growth_logging

For our entire thirty year history a strong focus on protecting ancient forests has been at the core of our being – and will continue to be, even as our organization continues to grow. We have certainly been at the forefront of protecting some amazing BC ancient forests including Carmanah Valley, Pinecone Boise Burke Wilderness and the Elaho Valley to name a few. We currently have 30,000 members and offices in four provinces.

That said, in our experience Ken Wu is an excellent campaigner and a tireless defender of the environment. We wish him the best of luck and success with his new group – the Ancient Forest Alliance. Ending oldgrowth logging on BC’s south coast is a worthy goal, one that we share with the Alliance.

In the meantime, with the recent departure of Mr. Wu from our organization we are in the process of hiring a new campaign team for our Victoria office and expect to be back battling for an end to oldgrowth logging on BC’s south coast, protecting BC’s wild rivers from being dammed and diverted by private hydro-power developers and getting rid of salmon farms in order to protect our wild salmon stocks, and all the other nature-protection campaigns we are known for.
