Berkeley Place Elevator Shaft, Davie Street, Vancouver, British

Walking to breakfast early on weekend morning we passed the site of what had been, until just days before, an apartment complex in Vancouver’s West End. The elevator shaft, with the somewhat incongruous potted palm tree, at the bottom were the only two things left standing that day. A week later the shaft was gone as well.

Castle Inn, Cache Creek, British Columbia 2017

A long time eye catcher as the highway splits at Cache Creek, this old motel appeared to be undergoing renovations when photographed last year.  Eight months or so later on a more recent road trip and there appears to have been little accomplished on the renovation front. Hopefully the Castle Inn will eventually  be restored to it’s former 50′s road side architectural glory.

Plane for Sale, Clinton, British Columbia 2017

An unusual looking small airplane for sale on the roadside in Clinton, British Columbia. One wonders how often people see an aircraft along the road and decide to stop and buy it.

Architecture, of course, like everything works in cycles of fashion. The A-frame entrance to suburban housing, at least in British Columbia, was common enough in the 60′s and 70′s. It’s perhaps rarer to see this vernacular architecture at use in commercial buildings from that era, certainly with the use of the double A-frame on the structure, which you can’t see in this image(the A is at either end of the building), and to see two buildings built the same next to one another. Note the modernist (less than a decade old) condo building with it’s silver exterior in view between the two.

Last Gas Station, Davie Street at Burrard Street, Vancouver Brit

Another sign of changing times, this Esso on Davie Street at Burrard Street is the last gas station in downtown Vancouver. How long it will exist is another thing. The property went up for sale last spring. Property in Vancouver, especially the core, is just far to valuable for use for something like a gas station. It’s a large footprint on the land and the property alone has been assessed at $36 million. Only a matter of time before this parcel of land is home to another condo tower and drivers will have to head out of downtown to fill up.

Box House, Bevan Avenue at Third Street, Sidney British Columbia

A great example of why it’s important to photograph a unique, even if insignificant on a larger scale, piece of architecture when you have the opportunity. This small square box of a house was bulldozed less than two weeks after I took this image. The house was very basic but unlike anything else on the street. I’m sure it’ll be replaced by a larger box, offering more residences on the same footprint which is good, but I doubt there will be anything unique about the new structure.

Mural and Back Alley, Trail British Columbia 2016

The back alley building seemed to, in some ways,  mirror the old newspaper building pictured in this mural above garbage cans and a parked car.  Historic murals offer an instant lesson or peek in to a region’s past.
