THANH, Yasuko 1

Yasuko Thanh is both an award-winning writer with a short story collection and a novel published (and a new publication on the way) and a musician who performs in a number of bands. I’ve photographed her singing and at a book reading/signing before but this was our first shot at a portrait. Her site is here. A review of her novel in the Globe and Mail is here.

Ruby Karinto, Victoria, British Columbia 2017

Ruby Karinto

Much of my photography centres around landscapes, natural and manmade and how that shapes us and our culture and/or how we and our cultures shapes our constructed and social landscapes. I like how the local makes us all unique to our own parts of the world.

I haven’t concentrated so much on people who shape our culture especially artists, be they writers, musicians, painters etc.

Local Victoria band Ruby Karinto are unique certainly. The foursome, lead vocalist and electronics, Ai Ito, Soma Morse, electronics and vocals, Damon Henry, bass and Jason Flower, percussion are unique. Lead vocalist Ai Ito performs in a mask. The lyrics to the band’s songs are at  least 50% in Japanese. Their lyrics are, according to drummer Jason Flower “based on cryptic Japanese folk tales and bizarre western pop culture references”.

Ruby Karinto 2Song titles include Moonwalk Uncle, Zelda and Team Chopsticks.

The images here are from a recent outdoor performance in Victoria. You can check out the band here.

I’ve written previously about drummer Jason Flower’s other musical endeavours, his used record shop Supreme Echo and his record label of the same name (here). Flower tracks down forgotten, neglected and  overlooked bands and their work and puts out vinyl records of their music along with supporting written and visual material providing not only entertainment but archiving music for the future

Local Bands Live, Victoria, BC 2015

Recently I’ve managed to get out and photograph a few local bands playing live, something that at the beginning of my career I did a lot. It’s still fun and there’s nothing like a live performance in a small venue. I’d never photographed any of the three bands, pictured below, before and they were photographed on different nights. What I found most interesting was how the bands shared members.

The first band I photographed was Line Traps, I went to see them as I knew their guitarist Tiemen Kuipers.

The second band was 12 Gauge Facial  (love that name) as I’d met the vocalist Yasuko Thanh (who is also a novelist) at the Line Traps gig. The Line Traps’ drummer was also 12 Gauge Facial’s drummer.

The final band was Hank Angel and his Island Devils. Hank is the bassist for 12 Gauge Facial but I didn’t realize that the guitarist from 12 Gauge was also in Hank’s band.

Some people follow their history through their cultural interests, movies, books and music.

The Pointed Sticks – Victoria, BC 2015

The Pointed Sticks, came out of the Vancouver punk scene in the late seventies. I photographed them quite often, perhaps only second to DOA, back then. They haven’t played a lot in the intervening years although they have been performing and recording. I last saw them perform at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver in 2009 .

This Victoria gig was their first in the island city since 1981.  It was an excellent show before an appreciative crowd.

It’s been a long time since I’ve photographed in a small club and I’d forgotten how bad the lighting can be. It was why I often used flash back in the early days, there often just wasn’t enough stage light to make decent photos. I was often the only photographer then and nobody objected to the use of the flash. This show I shot mainly available light but did shoot a few flash images, hoping I wasn’t annoying the band too much.

DOA front man Joe Keithley was in town playing a gig during the band’s farewell tour. Joe has decided to seek the NDP nomination in Coquitlam – Burke Mountain in order to run in the upcoming May provincial election. We decided to take a few portraits in front of the BC Legislature building in the afternoon. Here’s a few images from that shoot and one from the show.

Had the opening for my show of images of Vancouver punk rockers at Talk I Cheap Gallery in Victoria last night. A good turnout including the members of the Dishrags which was excellent.

The Ramones and The Avengers in Vancouver

I have a new show of my early Vancouver punk photos opening at the Talk Is Cheap Gallery on Pandora Street in Victoria this coming Saturday. I’ve been sorting through my negs yet again and had a couple news ones scanned. It’s interesting what I keep finding.

I came across this group shot of the Ramones posing for me before their gig at the Commodore.  I did notice the guy standing at left looking on but just figured he was a roadie or something and I’d just crop him out. However after seeing the scan I’m pretty certain that’s  it’s Gerry Hannah from the Subhumans.

This is The Avengers, with Penelope Houston at right. I photographed them twice when they played in Vancouver.

Don Denton Exhibition At Jem Gallery

I had a great opening at the JEM Gallery Friday night.  We were scheduled to be open from 6PM until 9PM but it was after 11PM before people stopped dropping by. Saturday was excellent as well and we didn’t close up shop until 5:30. Many thanks to gallery owner Carola Goetze for all her heard work.

Tom Harrison, then music editor of the Georgia Straight, and I drove out to the house Joe Keithley was renting in Burnaby off of Kingsway for a big interview for the entertainment weekly. Chuck was living with Joe at the time. This may have been the first big media shot DOA received.

UPDATE: Ooops. Just found more negs , the ones that were from that GS shoot, not sure what these were from, maybe just fun.
