The beautiful thing about the weather here on the southern tip on British Columbia’s Vancouver Island is that this photo could have been taken this week as I saw lots of golfers on the links while driving around. The unfortunate thing about the weather here is that this image was actually taken last June.

Bucking The Trend, Printing Photographs Small
A couple of weeks off which has been good for some travel, Kamloops, Maple Ridge, Vancouver and Portland, and now I’ve been doing some printing. I know everyone seems to be going for big photographs but I’m enjoying making small prints.
Photo Group Talks
BC Ferries, Swartz Bay, BC 2012 I’ve spoken to a number of photo groups lately, showing some of my images and talking about the projects. The audiences have been great, very appreciative and always lots of questions and discussion afterwards. It’s a two way street though. I get lots of feedback on my images which is so helpful and it’s often a surprise which photographs …
Olympic Peninsula Weekend Road Trip
Hit the road for a weekend with a trip around the Olympic Peninsula. I’d been down the east side before travelling to and from Portland but hadn’t done the whole loop around the peninsula. Great trip although the weather was constantly changing, providing a number of challenges for driving and making it difficult to get all the photos I wanted. That said it was a …
Spiderman Gives Good Photo
The great thing about Spiderman is that as Peter Parker he makes a living as a news photographer so he knows what photographers need. A local radio dude strikes an action pose for photographer Jesse Hlady.
Self Portraits
I’m a sucker for self-portraits. I like taking them and I like looking at them so I had to take a peek when I saw the Globe and Mail was running a Share Your Self Portrait page. I kind of like the smily face finger image. If you really want to want to spend some time looking at self-portraits check out the many pages of …
It’s Not a Mistake If You Meant To Make It
Atlanta based photographer Zack Arias had a recent blog post called Imperfect Work: Blowing it on Purpose

Seattle Art Museum and Diane Arbus
It’s always great to see an actual print, even if it is behind glass, that you’ve only seen as a reproduction before. This Garry Winogrand image of Diane Arbus is currently hanging at the Seattle Art Museum (SAM). Also on exhibition were a couple of Arbus prints, a collection of Imogen Cunningham prints and an exhibition of Andy Warhol photographs. Thanks to the SAM employee …
Cherry Blossoms and Residential Parking Only
Spring is here with cherry trees in full bloom and boats still parked in yards and not out on the water.
Wet Coast Weather
Out looking for a weather feature on a recent wet and very windy day and was driving away from a view of the breakwater as nobody was walking on it and with good reason, the waves were breaking over the top of the wall. Just as I pulled away I saw a runner heading onto the breakwater so pulled a u-turn and drove back to …
Happy New Year 2010
Who knows what surprises the new year will bring?

More Early Vancouver Punk Photos – Dishrags, Furies and Joe Keithley
Starting to sort through my negs from the early days of Vancouver’s punk rock world. Here’s a few more pix scanned from old prints. Joe Keithley after a gig at a high school The Dishrags, first concert, with the Furies The Furies Crowd at show, including Colin Griffiths, ?, and I believe, Scout from the Dishrags
Ho Ho Horror
It hard to find Christmas images that are different but the skeleton that the owner has standing outside the Science Works store on Oak Bay Avenue is always dressed properly for the season and at this time of the year the contrast is a little shocking. Not quite a shocking as the year the late artist Jimmy Wright erected a crucified Santa (pic below) on …
Afternoon Commute, Vancouver Island Style
Heading home in a small boat off Turkey Head with the setting sun lighting up Mt. Baker (in Washington State) in the background.
Artist Portraits
I really enjoying taking portraits, especially of creative people. It’s always interesting to try and incorporate their environment into the image. With tighter papers, every section is squeezed for space so we’re not running as many entertainment stories and consequently not as many portraits of artists etc. Here are a few, fairly recent, images. I really liked this image of Keith Hiscock at the Morris Gallery. …
Working On Projects
It’s always interesting when working on a project how certain themes or subjects start to repeat themselves, often threaten to become a project in themselves. Boats have begun to show up in many of my island photos, it makes sense as we have such easy access to water but until you start looking you don’t realize how many people do have boats and how they …
On Conscientious
It was more than a pleasant surprise today during my daily check of photo sites to click on Joerg Colberg’s Conscientious site and see one of my photos from the Salt Water &Rain project. It was especially heartening as this is one of the first projects where I’ve moved away (or at least I feel like I have) from my newspaper photojournalism background. The project …
Victoria Fall Scenes
Fall is here.
Brian Howell in the NY Times
The New York Times’ Home and Garden section has a slide show on the second house that writer (and artist) Douglas Coupland bought in Vancouver (behind his existing house) and turned into a gallery for his personal art collection. Slide number four shows a a photograph on the wall by BC photographer Brian Howell, from his series on wrestlers.
Timothy Findley – Portrait with a wine glass
Sometimes you don’t need a face for a portrait. I had photographed the late Timothy Findley for my first book First Chapter and following that photo session he sat down for an interview and lunch with then Calgary Herald books editor, now best selling author in his own right, Ken McGoogan. I joined the pair and Findley’s partner Bill Whitehead and continued to take a …
Early Vancouver Punk Rock – Furies, DOA, Skulls, Dishrags, Subhumans and Rabid
I came across a few prints and contact sheets I has tucked away in an envelope from the very early days of the Vancouver punk rock scene. Please send a note to correct me if I’m off on names etc. These were taken quite a while ago (1977ish? ) and I didn’t keep the notes I should have. The Furies at the Japanese hall. I …
Photography Story Roundup
The Observer has a story that looks at a Spanish academic’s claim that Robert Capa’s famous Falling Soldier was faked. The photo has often been a source of controversy and argument over whether or not it was real. The hometown paper has a look at the Look3 festival of photography in Charlottesville, VA. The Richmond Times-Dispatch also comments. The Birmingham Post has takes a look …
Diver Riley McCormick
Saanich diver Riley McCormick is a young upcoming Canadian athlete who’ll be someone to watch at the next summer olympics.. Travis Paterson wrote about Riley and about the amount of time he spends falling through the air each month while practicing. He’s not only an amazing athlete but seems to be a really nice young man as well, very personable, clowning with the younger kids …
